The Altmuehl bike path showcases a stunning landscape to those who ride on it, with its end points of Rothenburg - known around the world, be it in the United States or in Japan - and Regensburg, a UNESCO world heritage site and perhaps Germany’s most beautiful city. In Between, you’ll find the Franconian lake district and the Altmuehl valley nature park. You’ll be seeing moorlands, medieval castles and Baroque monasteries, Roman mansions and Franconian timber-framed houses: that’s what expects you on this tour - which is suitable for veteran cyclists and novices alike.
Day 1 Arrival in Rothenburg o.T.
This medieval town is known around the world - in the evening, the night watchman will show you around the alleyways.
Day 2 Rothenburg - Ansbach region, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
The countryside on the way towards the Altmuehl is slightly hilly, and you’ll be able to see Colmberg’s Zollernburg castle from far away.
Day 3 Ansbach region - Weißenburg region, 55-60 km / 34-37 mi
You’ll find traces of the Romans everywhere, as the Roman-Germanic limes ran straight through this region.
Day 4 Weißenburg region - Eichstätt, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
Slowly the Altmühl valley becomes deeper, the rocks emerge, castles impress from the heights. The baroque bishop's town of Eichstätt is charming.
Day 5 Eichstätt - Beilngries, approx. 45 km / 28 mi
You’ll be cycling along the river’s many twists, where junipers clad the cliffs. Beilngries’ medieval town walls are still intact.
Day 6 Beilngries - Kelheim, approx. 40-60 km / 25-37 mi
Today you’ll again have loads to see, for example the “Tatzelwurm”, a modern wooden bridge in Essing. Once in Kehlheim, you’ll have reached the Danube.
Day 7 Kelheim - Regensburg, approx. 40-55 km / 25-34 mi, boat trip
