There is a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, bistros, wine cellars, snack bars and places to shop all along the cycle path. That is why we do not offer half board. An evening meal costs approx.15-25 € per person. You can, of course, eat more economically or even more exquisitely.

The Altmühl cycle path - Rothenburg

The Altmuehl bike path showcases a stunning landscape to those who ride on it, with its end points of Rothenburg - known around the world, be it in the United States or in Japan - and Regensburg, a UNESCO world heritage site and perhaps Germany’s most beautiful city. In Between, you’ll find the Franconian lake district and the Altmuehl valley nature park. You’ll be seeing moorlands, medieval castles and Baroque monasteries, Roman mansions and Franconian timber-framed houses: that’s what expects you on this cycling tour on the Altmühl cycle path - which is suitable for veteran cyclists and novices alike.

 
The Altmühl cycle path - Essing

Day 1 Arrival in Rothenburg o.T.
This medieval town is known around the world - in the evening, the night watchman will show you around the alleyways of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town.

Day 2 Rothenburg - Ansbach, 49 km / 30 mi
The countryside on the way towards the Altmuehl is slightly hilly, and you’ll be able to see Colmberg’s Zollernburg castle.

Day 3 Ansbach - region Wettelsheim, 62 km / 39 mi
You’ll find traces of the Romans everywhere, as the Roman-Germanic limes ran straight through this region. You have reached the Altmühl in Wettelsheim.

Day 4 Region Wettelsheim - Eichstätt, 50 km / 31 mi
Slowly the Altmühl valley becomes deeper, the rocks emerge, castles impress from the heights. The baroque bishop's town of Eichstätt is charming.

Day 5 Eichstätt - Beilngries, 44 km / 27 mi
The baroque episcopal city lies in the middle of a magnificent rocky landscape. The Altmühltal Nature Park is characterised by juniper heath.

Day 6 Beilngries - Kehlheim, 48 km/28 mi
Cycle along the Altmühl cycle path to the Danube. Prunn Castle towers majestically over the river, while the Liberation Hall in Kelheim can be seen from afar.

Day 7 Riedenburg - Regensburg, 38 km/24 mi
Cycle leisurely along the Danube to Regensburg, Germany's most beautiful city. Explore the medieval maze of alleyways and enjoy Regensburger Bratwürschtl sausages with mustard, black croissants and lager beer.

Day 8 Return or Extension
The tour ends after breakfast. If you like, extend your cycling on the Altmühl cycle path.

      Free hotel parking according to availability, no reservation possible.
      Large car parks outside the old town, cost approx. 6 €/day.
      Free parking behind the train station, frequently used by commuters during the week, no reservation possible.

    • Arrival by train:
      Rothenburg o.T. train station, ca. 600 m to the city center

    • Arrival at Frankfurt airport:
      By train, every half an hour, duration approx. 3-3,25 hours, 2-3 changes, normal fee from approx 60 €.

    • Pre-booked rental bikes are ready for you in your hotel.

    Return transfer:

    • Under your own steam - we recommend taking the train. The trains starts every hour, duration approx. 3 hours, 3 changes, normal price from approx. 35 €.
       
    • Return transfer by train (optional):
      free choice of train on local trains from 9.00 a.m.; no transfer to the railway station
      Bicycle transport free of charge
    • Return transfer of own bikes to Rothenburg for return journey on Thu, Fri, Sat:
      Return the bikes to the last stage hotel by 5.00 pm the day before at the latest - the bikes will be ready the following day from approx. 12.00 pm at the hotel in Rothenburg.
