The Altmuehl bike path showcases a stunning landscape to those who ride on it, with its end points of Rothenburg - known around the world, be it in the United States or in Japan - and Regensburg, a UNESCO world heritage site and perhaps Germany’s most beautiful city. In Between, you’ll find the Franconian lake district and the Altmuehl valley nature park. You’ll be seeing moorlands, medieval castles and Baroque monasteries, Roman mansions and Franconian timber-framed houses: that’s what expects you on this cycling tour on the Altmühl cycle path - which is suitable for veteran cyclists and novices alike.
Day 1 Arrival in Rothenburg o.T.
The medieval town is famous the world over, and a guided tour with the night watchman through the alleyways of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town is a fascinating experience.
Day 2 Rothenburg - Herrieden, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
The countryside on the way towards the Altmuehl is slightly hilly, and you’ll be able to see Colmberg’s Zollernburg castle from far away.
Day 3 Herrieden - Wettelsheim, 50-60 km / 31-37 mi
You’ll find traces of the Romans everywhere, as the Roman-Germanic limes ran straight through this region. You have reached the Altmühl in Wettelsheim.
Day 4 Wettelsheim - Eichstätt, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
Slowly the Altmühl valley becomes deeper, the rocks emerge, castles impress from the heights. The baroque bishop's town of Eichstätt is charming.
Day 5 Eichstätt - Kinding, 35-40 km / 28 mi
You cycle along the many meanders of the river, the slopes are overgrown with juniper heath. The picturesque little town of Kinding welcomes you with warm hospitality, peace and cosiness.
Day 6 Kinding - Riedenburg, approx. 45 km/28 mi
The Altmühl meets the Main-Danube Canal in Dietfurt. The route continues at a relaxed pace to Riedenburg, your destination for today's stage. The ruins of Tachenstein and Rabenstein castles and the well-preserved Rosenburg Castle frame the town.
